Note: the instructions below are a generic description of how to execute this stitch pattern. For a single repeat, you'd only need nine stitches but you'd have a VERY narrow piece! In the example shown, there are four repeats of the stitch, so to make a swatch that looks like the one shown, you need to cast on 32 stitches (4 x the multiple of 8 stitches needed for a single repeat of the pattern.)
Row 1 (RS) Knit
Row 2: *p6, k2; rep from *
Row 3: K the knit sts and p the purl sts
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: p2, *k2, p6; rep from *, end k2, p4
Row 7: K the knit sts and p the purl sts
Row 8: Purl
Rep rows 1-8.
